Mercedes Schlapp doesn't have an easy gig as the White House strategic communications adviser. It is not easy for Mercedes Schlapp to be the adviser to strategic communications at the White House. Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focussed on the task in hand and has worked closely with the White House's political and legislative affairs departments and policy shops, as well as the broader communications operation in order to oversee policy implementations. As of now she's been focusing on a variety of topics, including safety at schools and the use of opioids. Her interactions with journalists aren't very much in her present position. In March, she was the subject of a sudden surge in interest when it was known that her name would be considered a possible candidate to take over Hope Hicks's position as director of communications. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a comfortable position as White House strategist communications advisor. Her job is made difficult due to the fact she works alongside a president of the White House who serves as the director of his communications. There are also numerous legal issues that can break an administration's message strategy, and several Cabinet secretaries entangled in personal disputes. However, throughout it all Schlapp is focussed on the task that she has been assigned, and is working closely with the White House's political affairs as well as legislative affairs and policy shops as with the larger communications team in order to oversee policy implementations. She has focused on topics such as the safety of schools, opioids, and infrastructure, along with trade. At the moment, Schlapp does not deal much with journalists. There was a great deal of press attention after she was named as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks, the communications director. It was a tense battle. Schlapp's allies began fighting with Tony Sayegh on the news. When The Washington Examiner published a negative article about Sayegh Schlapp claimed she phoned Sayegh to show a relationship with her.
