Nancy O'Dell's debut job in the broadcast industry was as a reporter/anchor for WPDE-TV Myrtle Beach South Carolina. In the following years, she worked as a morning-news anchor as well as a crime reporter at WCBD TV. O'Dell's reports in Charleston concerning the lack of leniency by police when it comes to DUI cases led to a State Law Enforcement Division to investigate. The result was states authorities enforcing more rigorous guidelines in these cases.
